Brand studio - Providence, RI

Clear beats clever, and clear is harder.

Beamwright Studio is six people in Providence, Rhode Island. We settle what a company is for, put it into words and design, and stay until the first version of it is out in public. Engagements run eight to twelve weeks.

  • Founded 2019
  • Six people
  • 8–12 week engagements

Nobody buys a brand. People buy the thing, then tell somebody about it, and whatever they tell them is the brand. So the work is not decoration. It is choosing the sentence you want repeated, proving you can back it, and making every page, name and invoice agree with it.

What we sell

Four pieces of work. Most companies need two of them, and we will say which two before you pay for four.

  1. 01Strategy

    Positioning

Who you are for, what you are better at, and the claim you can make without crossing your fingers.

    • A sentence short enough to survive a hallway
    • The customers you are willing to lose
    • Proof you already own and do not use
  2. 02Words

    Naming and voice

A name that gets through a phone call, and a way of writing that sounds like one company twice in a row.

    • A short list, each with the argument for it
    • A first look at what is already taken
    • The words you use and the words you retire
  3. 03Design

    Identity direction

The look, settled once, in a form the next person can follow without calling us.

    • Type, color and layout decided together
    • The things you send every week, built first
    • A guide short enough that somebody reads it
  4. 04Launch

    Launch and campaign

The first weeks in public, planned before the last file is finished.

    • What goes out, in what order, to whom
    • Who has to hear it from you first
    • What counts as it having worked

Work we can show

  1. Coastal transport

    Saltbox Ferry Co.

A family ferry line between two islands, selling a forty-minute crossing as though it were a bus fare. We kept the name, which was older than anyone working there, and rebuilt the story around the water itself. The schedule board says so now, and so does the ticket.

  2. Community banking

    Millrace Credit Union

A credit union that wrote like a form letter and could not work out why it felt distant. We gave it the voice of somebody who lives four miles away, then rebuilt the rate sheets, the branch signs and the loan letters until all three sounded like one person.

  3. Ceramics

    Kiln & Tide

A ceramics studio going from a market stall to wholesale, where the person who made the pot is no longer standing next to it. We built an identity that survives a cardboard box and a line sheet, and a story a buyer can repeat to their own customers.

What you can hold us to

  1. 01

    Nothing leaves without its reasoning

Every decision arrives with the argument for it written down. If we cannot explain a choice in two sentences to somebody who was not in the room, it is not finished yet.

  2. 02

    The answer is sometimes no

We turn down work we would do badly, and we say which part we would do badly. Twice a year that means telling a company it needs a second salesperson rather than a new logo.

  3. 03

You pay for the thinking, not the hours

A fixed fee against a fixed scope, agreed before the first call is over. Nothing costs more later because a decision took us longer than we expected it to.

  4. 04

    Four projects, six people

We run four engagements at a time and no more. If we tell you there is a wait, that is what it is: there is no second team behind a curtain.

How ten weeks usually go

Eight when the company is small and already decided, twelve when it is neither. Every date is in the contract before anything starts.

  1. 012 weeks

    Ask around

We talk to your people, four or five of your customers, and one person who chose somebody else instead. We read the numbers you were keeping anyway. It ends with a written point of view, which you are welcome to take apart.

  2. 025 weeks

    Decide

Position, name and design direction, shown together because they only make sense together. One recommendation, the reasoning, and the routes we set aside. You make the call in the room rather than by circulating it for comments.

  3. 033 weeks

    Hand over

Files you own, a guide the next person can follow, and the first weeks in public planned out. We walk it through with the people who will use it, and we answer the phone for a good while afterward.

Start a project

Call between nine and five thirty and you get Rosa or Elliot. Write outside those hours and you get an answer the same evening, or first thing the next morning.

The form is below. Answer the parts you can: the rough budget and the rough date are worth more to us than a polished description.

Two of us are usually in before nine. Nobody is here on a Saturday, and we would think less of ourselves if we were.

What are you working on?

Six questions, four of them optional. We read every one and reply within one business day.

A range is fine. It changes what we propose, not whether we reply.

Come with the problem, not the brief.

Half an hour on a call. We will say whether this is work we would do well, and when it is not, who does it better than we would.
